    Chief judge announces two finalists for associate judge vacancy

    Chief Circuit Judge Kathryn E. Creswell is pleased to announce that following an October 31, 2016 meeting of the Circuit Judges of the Eighteenth Judicial Circuit Court, two finalists for the Office of Associate Judge have been selected and certified to the Illinois Supreme Court. The finalists are seeking to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Associate Judge Mary E. O’Connor. From these names, the Circuit Judges will select one appointee by secret ballot.

    YLD to host Holiday Party on December 8

    Please join us at the 19th Annual ISBA YLD Holiday Party. This year's party is in conjunction with the ISBA's Midyear Meeting. Not only will there be warm appetizers, an open bar, and an opportunity to meet young lawyers from across the state, the event benefits a great cause: the Children’s Assistance Fund.

    Initially created to assist with the opening of children's waiting rooms in courthouses across the State of Illinois, the IBF/YLD Children's Assistance Fund has since grown, and now provides funding to organizations across the State of Illinois that provide legal assistance to children, maintain children's waiting rooms in courthouses, work to reduce recidivism of juveniles, and/or work to reduce the incidents of domestic violence in families with children.

    James E. Augustyn 1951-2016

    James (Jim) E. Augustyn, 65, of Chicago, Il, passed away suddenly on Sunday October 9, 2016 in a community park near his home. He was born in Chicago to Edward J. and Theresa J. (Kopera) Augustyn. He is survived by his mother, Theresa, of Chicago; sister, Donna (Patrick) Augustyn-Sloan of Lacon, IL. Jim is also survived by nieces and nephews, Samantha, Joseph, Bonnie, Christopher, Sara, Theresa and Anne, two great nephews, a great aunt and cousins. He was godfather to Samantha and Adam. He was a colleague and friend to Maria Romero and Guadalupe Martinez. He is preceded in death by his father and sister, Jeanne. Jim graduated from Georgetown University in 1973.

    Kenneth J. James 1932-2016

    Kenneth J. James, 84, of Winnetka, IL, passed away on on Monday, September 26, 2016, at The Presbyterian Home in Evanston. He was managing partner of Kenneth J. James Partners in Northfield, Illinois. Those who knew him called him a true gentleman and kind soul.

    Born on April 6, 1932 in Evanston, IL, he was the oldest son of Jeremiah and Helen James.

    Raised in Evanston, he graduated from Evanston High School in 1950. He attended Stanford University where he graduated in 1954 with a B.S. in Economics. While at Stanford, he pursued two of his passions- joining the wrestling team and playing the drums in the marching band.

    IBF Gala remarks by Illinois Bar Foundation President Elizabeth Kaveny

    The following is a transcript from a speech given by Elizabeth Kaveny, President of the Illinois Bar Foundation, during their 18th Annual Gala on October 14, 2016 at the Four Seasons in Chicago.

    Good Evening. For those of you that I have not had the chance to meet yet this evening, my name is Elizabeth Kaveny. It is really my honor and fortune to serve as the President of the Board of the Illinois Bar Foundation this year and to welcome all of you to this year’s Gala. What a beautiful night it is.

    In 1972, a young man was buried in an unmarked grave in Missouri. His own attorney later added a tombstone which read simply:

    “Each era finds an improvement in the law for the benefit of mankind.”

    Schoenbeck named partner at Orland Park business law firm

    Orland Park Business Law and Estate Planning Attorney George L. Schoenbeck, III graduated with honors from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and went on to earn his J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law. He focuses his practice in estate planning and estate administration, business succession planning, business general counsel matters and commercial transactions.
