    ISBA to Honor Class of 1967 Distinguished Counsellors on Nov. 16

    The Illinois State Bar Association will honor the Class of 1967 Distinguished Counsellors next week. This title is conferred annually upon those ISBA members who are completing their 50th year of practice.

    The Board of Governors is pleased to announce the 2017 Class will be honored at a special luncheon on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at the Union League Club. A reception will begin at 11:00 a.m., and lunch at 11:45 a.m. followed by the program.

    Tickets to the luncheon are available and may be purchased online. Any questions regarding the luncheon may be directed to Kim Weaver.

    Hotel Reservation Deadline Extended for Midyear Meeting

    The deadline for making lodging reservations at the Palmer House Hilton for the 2017 Midyear Meeting, which will be held Dec. 7– 9 in Chicago, has been extended through Monday, Nov. 13. Our conference rate for 2017 is $179 for single or double occupancy, plus applicable taxes. Reservations at the Palmer House Hilton may be made online.

    Reservations received after the Nov. 13 deadline will be subject to availability. The deposit will be forfeited for all no-shows, early departures, and cancellations less than 72 hours prior to arrival.

    Nomination Deadline for At-Large ABA House of Delegates Positions Is Nov. 17

    The ISBA Assembly has revised the policy on the selection of ISBA delegates to the ABA House of Delegates. As a result, two new at-large positions have been created, and the Assembly will elect members to fill these positions at the December 9, 2017meeting.

    The nominees for these positions must be members of the ISBA who are in good standing and from the appropriate area. One will be from Cook County and one from the area outside Cook County. Both will serve for one-year terms commencing immediately, and the delegates will be part of the ISBA delegation at the February 2018 ABA Midyear Meeting and the August 2018 ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago.

    Nominations must be made in writing by at least 20 ISBA members in good standing from the appropriate area. Nominations must be filed with the office of the executive director not later than Friday, November 17, 2017.

    Nomination Deadline for "Under 35" ABA House of Delegates Positions Is Nov. 17

    At the December 9, 2017 ISBA Assembly meeting, two “Under 35” Delegates to the ABA House of Delegates will be elected, one from Cook County and one from the area outside Cook County. 

    The nominees for these positions must be members of the ISBA who are in good standing and from the appropriate area. The elected delegates will serve for two-year terms commencing June, 2018 and will join the ISBA delegation at the ABA meeting in Chicago in August 2018.

    The outside Cook County position has recently become vacant, and Cory White, who is the incumbent for the Cook County position, is eligible for reelection.

    Nominations must be made in writing by at least 20 ISBA members in good standing from the appropriate area. Nominations must be filed with the office of the executive director no later than Friday, November 17, 2017.

    ISBA Hosts Anatomy of a Medical Negligence Trial CLE

    ISBA hosted its CLE program, Anatomy of a Medical Negligence Trial, on Wedenesday, Nov. 1, at the Chicago Regional Office. This full-day seminar, moderated by Brian Murphy of Hofeld and Schaffner, offered the dual perspectives of plaintiff and defense attorneys for all stages of a medical negligence trial. ISBA President Hon. Russell Hartigan (ret.), Hon. Clare E. McWilliams of the Circuit Court of Cook County in Chicago, and Hon. Thomas V. Lyons of the Circuit Court of Cook County in Chicago delivered the final presentation as a panel offering an in-depth look at the trial process through the lens of the judiciary.

    Joint Midyear Meeting Advanced Registration Deadline Is Dec. 1

    The Illinois State Bar Association and the Illinois Judges Association are pleased to invite you to celebrate the profession and consider issues of mutual interest to the bench and bar during our annual Midyear Meeting, which will be held Dec. 7-9, 2017, at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel in Chicago. 

    Hotel reservations may be made online through Monday, Nov.13.

    The advanced registration deadline is Friday, Dec. 1.

    Young Lawyers Division Hosts "The Legal Profession 101 for New Lawyers"

    The Illinois State Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division hosted a brown bag lunch on Thursday, Oct. 26. Panelists spoke to new lawyers and law students about life as a lawyer. Topics included how and why the panelists became involved in ISBA, as well how to build relationships, improve a resume, and gain experience in the field.

    IBF Honors Senator Durbin at Gala

    The Illinois Bar Foundation hosted its 19th Annual Gala on Friday, October 20 at the Four Seasons in Chicago. U.S. Senator Dick Durbin was honored with the Distinguished Award of Excellence.

    Tickets Now Available for 20th Annual YLD Holiday Party

    Mark your calendars for Thursday, December 7, to join us at the 20th annual ISBA Young Lawyers Division Holiday Party at Exchequer Pub in Chicago from 7:00-9:00 p.m.! This event is an opportunity to socialize, enjoy food and refreshments, and meet young lawyers from across the state while supporting a great cause. Proceeds from the holiday party will go to the Illinois Bar Foundation YLD's Children Assistance Fund. 

    Initially created to assist with the opening of children's waiting rooms in courthouses across the State of Illinois, the Children's Assistance Fund has since grown, and now provides funding to organizations across Illinois that provide legal assistance to children, maintain children's waiting rooms in courthouses, work to reduce recidivism of juveniles, and/or work to reduce the incidents of domestic violence in families with children.

    Tickets are now available online for $30, but may also be purchased at the door for $35.
