Founded 50 years ago by a small group of downstate Illinois lawyers, Attorneys’ Title Guaranty Fund, Inc. has evolved into a family of companies offering a broad spectrum of services to more than 4,000 lawyers in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan. The company now garners revenue in excess of 100 million annually and will issue its three millionth title insurance policy this year.

ATG was founded in 1964 thanks to the efforts of Urbana attorney Stanley B. Balbach and his law partners Richard L. Thies and Charles M. Webber. Balbach’s early efforts built the foundation, and he remained active with the organization until his retirement from the board of directors in 2007. Balbach died in 2012 at the age of 92. Birnbaum cites newly elected Board Chair Ward F. McDonald, who served as CEO from 1970-1983, as the person most responsible for bringing ATG from a concept into a thriving business. “It was Ward’s unique ability to promote the ATG mission that built it into a grassroots movement, and over time—a formidable force in the legal and real estate communities.”
The Illinois Supreme Court has appointed the Hon. Lisa Holder White, Resident Circuit Judge of Macon County, Sixth Judicial Circuit, to the Appellate Court of Illinois, Fourth Judicial District. White has been assigned to duty with the Fourth District Appellate Court since 2013. This vacancy was created by the death of the Hon. John McCullough. It is effective July 1, 2014, and terminates on Dec. 1, 2014,
Marvin S. Andich, 92, of Rock Island, died Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Silver Cross Nursing Center, Rock Island.
Funeral services are 3 p.m. Tuesday at Congregation Beth Israel at the Tri City Jewish Center, Rock Island. Burial is in the Hebrew Cemetery, Rock Island. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island, is assisting the family. Memorials may be made to the Congregation Beth Israel, the Jewish Federation of the Quad-Cities or to the American Cancer Society/Relay for Life — Marla's Marvels' Team.
Marvin S. Andich was born Jan. 5, 1922, in Rock Island, a son of Louis and Sadie Pollack Andich. He married Beverly A. Shapiro on May 27, 1948, in Davenport. She died Jan. 22, 2013.
Marvin graduated from Rock Island High School and Augustana College. He received his juris doctorate from the University of Iowa School of Law. He practiced law in Rock Island for almost 60 years at the law firm of Andich and Andich. In early years, he served as a hearing officer for the Illinois Department of Revenue and in later years served as an Assistant Illinois Attorney General. Marvin also owned with his late brothers the Readmore Book World stores in Rock Island and Moline, as well as the Andich Brothers News Agency.
Charles Wade "Chuck" Hendrix, 94, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, passed away at his home in Champaign on Sunday, June 8, 2014.
He was born in Danville on Aug. 13, 1919, to Charles and Maude Hendrix.
Chuck was a young Army officer at the beginning of World War II when he met a beautiful Army nurse, Adeline Dorothy Jablonski, in Brownwood, Texas. Soon after, they both shipped overseas to the European Theater, where Chuck served with the 25th Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron, 4th Armored Division, and Adeline with the 32nd General Hospital. They courted and became engaged in England and were married on June 30, 1945, in Aachen, Germany. His wife survives.
Also surviving are his daughters, Patricia H. Chicoine (Jim Sczudlo) of Houston and Adele M. Hendrix (Jerry Rietveld) of Northfield; three grandchildren, Jason S. Chicoine (Julie) of Chaska, Minn., and Katrina Rietveld and Irena Rietveld, both of Northfield; one step-grandson, James P. Sczudlo of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and two great grandchildren, Lexi Chicoine and Bailey Chicoine of Chaska. Chuck also is survived by his brother, Dr. J.W. Hendrix (Mary) of Kalamazoo, Mich.; his daughter-in-law, Thavil Hendrix of West Richland, Wash.; a niece; and five nephews.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Virginia J. Hendrix; and his son, Charles E. Hendrix.

Ms. Sullivan is a 2012 law graduate from the University of Chicago and received her undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis. Sergeant Joel Marquez, of the Downers Grove Police Department, received a 2014 Law Enforcement Award from the ISBA on Wednesday, June 18 during a ceremony at the DuPage County Administration Building Auditorium in Wheaton.
Sergeant Marquez was nominated by Robert J. Anderson, a circuit judge in the 18th Judicial Circuit Court. ISBA Second Vice President Vincent Cornelius presented the award.
The ISBA’s Law Enforcement Award was created to recognize sworn law enforcement officers for conduct that promotes justice and to distinguish those individuals whose service to the public brings honor and respect to the entire criminal justice system. It is given to recognize those who truly excel in the field of law enforcement. In addition to Sergeant Marquez, four other law enforcement officers from judicial districts throughout Illinois are being honored.
Sergeant Marquez was recognized for his exceptional work to educate his fellow law enforcement officers on the long-term impact that the crime of domestic violence has on families in DuPage County.
The Re-Connecting the Pathways Conference Steering Committee has honored ISBA Past President Mark D. Hassakis and ISBA Legislative Director James R. Covington III with an award for their advocacy work, particularly as it impacted the time needed to resolve juvenile appellate cases. They were honored in the Adolescent Development and Trauma-Informed Practice category.
The awards were presented in Springfield on Tuesday, June 3.
William F. Kelley was installed as the 58th President of the Northwest Suburban Bar Association on June 12, 2014 during the Association’s annual dinner meeting at Maggiano’s in Schaumburg. His brother and former partner, the Hon. Judge Thomas J. Kelley, administered the oath of office to William Kelley, the officers and Board of Governors.
Kelley said that he was “humbled and honored to take over the helm as President and that the core focus of the Association will continue to be fostering an atmosphere of collegiality, civility and respect among members of the bar and bench, while honing their professional skills.” He noted that “Staying on top of the law makes us more effective advocates and advisors.”
William Kelley is the manager partner of the law firm Kelley, Kelley & Kelley. The law firm of Kelley, Kelley & Kelley is located in Schaumburg and has been serving clients in the northwest suburbs for over 50 years, having been founded by John P. Kelley who passed away in 2009.
John P. Kelley was honored with the NWSBA Distinguished Service Award during the annual dinner. William Kelley noted that his father’s “focus and attention to detail, insisting upon impeccable work product, tenaciously protecting his clients, and his modeling of integrity and professionalism to this date remain an incredible inspiration to me, my brothers, his associates and colleagues.” The Honorable Martin C. Kelley, another brother and former partner of William F. Kelley, accepted the award on behalf of their father.
Thomas O. Meyer, 63, of Rockford died Saturday, May 24, 2014 at home with his wife, Lydia, by his side holding his hand. Tom fought a six year battle with cancer, which he tackled with unbelievable strength and courage. He was born March 5, 1951 in Rockford, IL to Eugene and Ellen (Roland) Meyer. He married the love of his life, Lydia Salucka Lindstrom, on February 6, 1993 in Rockford, Illinois. He was a member of Rockford Country Club and Winnebago County Bar Association.
Tom graduated from Auburn High School, Illinois State University and John Marshal Law School. He practiced law for 38 years with several partners—all of whom remained friends long after their law partnerships dissolved---including Tom Nash, Gordy Ring, Barney Natale and Tim Horning. He assisted thousands of friends, family and clients in his practice of law; and had the honor and pleasure of practicing law with his son, Nick, for five years.
